The 39-year-old Finn started the afternoon loop of three stages in third place - four seconds off the lead - but turned the rally on its head on stage seven in his Ford, charging past the Subarus that were lying first and second until then. By the end of the day Gronholm's lead was 8.3 seconds, but the battle for second was the highlight late in the afternoon as just 2.4 seconds separated second place Petter Solberg from Dani Sordo in sixth. Solberg did well to maintain his pace while his Australian team-mate Chris Atkinson lost time on stage seven and surrendurred both the lead and second place before ending the day in third. Sebastien Loeb overtook his Citroen team-mate Sordo on stage six and then Mikko Hirvonen's Ford on the next test to move up to fourth, heading the Finn and Sordo. Seventh place Henning Solberg could not keep up with the six at the front and looks set to drop back further than his current 35 second deficit to Sordo on Saturday. But his battle will be to keep the place and fend off the advances of his Stobart Ford team-mate Jari-Matti Latvala, who trails him by 3.1 seconds. Manfred Stohl's Kronos Citroen and Jan Kopecky's privateer Skoda completed the top ten with British duo Guy Wilks maintaining 12th in his privateer Ford and Matthew Wilson passing Luis Perez Companc to move up to 13th in his Stobart-run version.
